Wirnda Barna opened in September 2009 after recommendations were made by the Mid West Aboriginal Arts Industry Strategy (MWAAIS) to support Aboriginal artists in the Upper Murchison Region of Western Australia.

Wirnda Barna is governed by a dedicated Indigenous Board committed to creating a sustainable and profitable organisation for the social and economic benefit of artists and communities in the region. It addresses many social and economic issues through its operations in the communities it represents and has become invaluable in building appreciation of the largely unknown Indigenous culture of the Upper Murchison region.
